As I get older, and not necessarily wiser, I find myself looking back on my life and in particular the memories of pivotal points.
In advancing years, memory is not always accurate. It gets distorted, confused and quite often blended with other memories. So documentary evidence is very useful to recall memories – in particular photographs. I have always, from the age of seven, had a camera and became a prolific photographer. This was useful on attending art college where I was given a camera and copious amount of film and sent out to photograph anything.
This painting ‘The Art Students 1972’ is based on one of my photographs at that time. Of course the photo depicts people, places and things but not necessarily who, what or why they are – that is lost in time. So my memory has filled in the blanks to make it a reasonable record – although it may not be 100% accurate!
‘The Art Students 1972′ is painted on two household wooden panel doors. The reason being metaphorical – it’s true to say’ as one door closes another opens’. And I have a ready stock of many doors – previously purchesed for use as exhibition display panels for an arts fetival I organised many years ago. So now I have embarked on a series of ‘door’ paintings based on my life experiences. This makes them very personal to myself but probably won’t relate to everyone.
